Inkscape Tutorial – Using Gradient Over Multiple Objects

April 14th, 2007

Using gradient over multiple objects usually generate very beautiful results, it is very easy to do, in case you don’t know how to, just follow these simple steps.

First of all, create any two objects (you can create more than two too), for this tutorial I am going to use two rectangles. Two Rectangles

Now, select both objects, open Fill and Stroke window (right click -> Fill and Stroke) and choose linear gradient.

Choose any gradient of your choice and close this window, this would result in something like

Now select both objects and choose “Gradient Tool” from the left tool bar

Drag from corner of one object to the opposing corner of other object

Hurray! you have successfully created a gradient spanning multiple objects. You can use same technique on different type of and different number of objects. Have fun.

Just a quick note for those of you who are trying to do this using the tile clone dialogue…

you have a couple of options

    1)
*unlink all the clones after you create them
    *follow above instructions

    2)
*create your tiled clones (edit->clones->create tiled clones)
*select any object then go (edit->clones->select original)
*move the original clone out of the way
*unset the fill on the original (fill and stroke dialogue) set fill to none, then select the question mark to unset the fill, the object should go black, so it could be a good idea to move it off the canvas…

    *finally, prcede as normal

nice tutorial. But how do you apply one gradient to multiple objects that overlap each other without getting a darker color at the overlapped areas?

i found out, it had me stumped for a while though.
The solution was to to use the “union” option to make them one so that the gradient would be applied as if there were on object

typo the last “on” has to be “one”
so > “as if there were one object”
